Book Review: November 9 by Colleen Hoover

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

WHY DID I PICK IT?I’m having a book marathon of Colleen Hoover and it’s the book’s turn in my to be read files.
WHAT I LIKED?
The cover.
The selfless love.
Ben’s poems.
The plot twist.
The concept of the story.
Fallon O'Neil.

I love the character of Fallon here. I can relate to her, and her opinion about career and love. She knows her priorities. She’s emotionally strong and independent, even when she found love in Ben, she didn’t give in easily with her feelings—career first before love life, she does what she thinks is right. She is selfless and kind.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE?
Verbally abusive dad.
The self-pity Fallon.

I somehow understand her. Well, because she was only 16 by that time.
Ben dating his sister in law, Jordyn, a year after his brother’s death.
The pervert Ben.
The controlling Ben.
The scary Ben.

I hate the things Ben did. Like how he objectifies women. If I ever meet someone like Ben and tells me on our first meeting that he wants to see what color my underwear is. Oh gosh, no, I hope I don’t meet someone like him.
How about undressing Fallon without her consent just to satisfy his curiosity about her scars, and touching her even when she told him to stop. Those really disturbed me! I’ll be really scared. I’ll never dream to bump into someone like him.
CRINGE-WORTHY LINES:
“But if we’re just going to sit here and stare at each other, it’d be nice if she were showing a little cleavage, instead of wearing this long-sleeved shirt that leaves everything to the imagination. It’s pushing eighty degrees outside. She should be in something a lot less … convent-inspired.”
Well, women got to wear what they want!
“I barely know you, so I’m not about to argue with you over your level of intelligence because you could very well be as dumb as a rock. But at least you’re pretty.”
So it’s okay for women to be dumb as long as they are pretty and boys get or do what they want. Disgusting.
“I’ve never wanted to use physical force on a girl before, but I want to push her to the ground and hold her there until the cab drives away.”
Like WTF, Christian Grey is that you?
FAVORITE LINES:
“You’ll never be able to find yourself if you’re lost in someone else.”
“Falling in love may not be a conscious decision, but removing yourself from the situation before it happens is. So if I meet someone I think I might fall in love with … I’ll just remove myself from their presence until I’m ready for it.”
“Comfort can sometimes be a crutch when it comes to figuring out your life. Goals are achieved through discomfort and hard work. They aren’t achieved when you hide out in a place where you’re nice and cozy.”
“When you find love, you take it. You grab it with both hands and you do everything in your power not to let it go. You can’t just walk away from it and expect it to linger until you’re ready for it.”
“I want you to follow your passion instead of your heart.”
“Love should be between two people, and if it isn’t, I’d rather bow out than take part in the race.”
“When you’re willing to give up the things that mean the most to you just to see someone else happy, that’s real love.”
“We don’t get to choose our parents, and parents don’t get to choose their children. But we do get to choose how hard we’re willing to work in order to make the best of what we’re given.”
“A body is simply a package for the true gifts inside.”
“Youth and beauty fade. Human decency doesn’t.”
WOULD I RECOMMEND IT?
Yes and no.
